ITR Filing
Documents Required for ITR Filing: A Simple Checklist
20 June 2026·Tool Syco Team
Filing your Income Tax Return becomes a lot smoother when your documents are ready before you start. Below is a simple checklist grouped by who you are. You won't always need every item — it depends on your income type — but this covers the common cases.
Everyone needs these
These basics apply to almost every taxpayer:
- PAN and Aadhaar (linked)
- Bank account details — account number and IFSC for any refund
- Form 26AS and AIS/TIS — your tax credit and reported-transactions statements from the income tax portal
- Bank statements for the financial year
If you're salaried
- Form 16 from your employer
- Salary slips, if Form 16 isn't available
- Rent receipts or rent agreement, if you're claiming HRA
- Home loan interest certificate, if applicable
If you're a freelancer or professional
- Invoices raised and payments received during the year
- Expense records related to your work (software, rent, internet, travel)
- Bank statements showing business receipts
If you run a business
- Sales and purchase records
- Profit & loss and balance sheet, if maintained
- GST returns, if you're registered
Investment & deduction proofs
To claim deductions, keep proof of things like:
- Life insurance (LIC), PPF, ELSS, and other 80C investments
- Health insurance premium (80D)
- Donations, education loan interest, and similar
